History
At it's founding Theatre De Regentes was the largest covered swimming bath in Europe. In the building with Art Deco elements - stemming from 1920 - many inhabitants from The Hague obtained their swimming certificates or visited the tearoom, situated on the first floor.
Swimming pool
In the eighties the building was turned down as a swimming pool because of sharpened legislations with regard to hygiene and environmental policy. Due to renovation - and maintenance costs being too high it was decided then, in 1995, to close down and dismantle the premises. After its close-down the neighbourhood took the initiative to maintain the distinct building and to give it a new function for the colourful, yet somewhat fallen into decay area. The municipality has embraced this initiative by giving the building on loan to the, in the meantime newly established, Foundation Zwembad de Regentes. Meanwhile in the still closed swimming pool the first theatre project was organized, in 1996.
Theatre
Due to several rebuildings and the applying of new facilities through the years Theatre De Regentes has grown into a full-fledged theatre with five halls:
- The Bigh Hall (the former swimming pool hall) with 380 seats
- The Small Hall (the former paddling pool) with about 45 seats
- The Kettlehouse (the former boilerhouse) with about 35 seats
- The Deep (the former bassin of the swimming pool)
- The Studio
The programming brings you drama, youth performances, dance, (world)music, music theatre and small-scale opera. Besides that the theatre is part of the programming of several local and domestic festivals, such as the Holland Dance Festival, Day in the Surf, the Cadance Festival en the World Music theatre festival.
The exceptional architecture and the authenticity of the building (which can be found in the façade and the tiling among others), the service-conscious staff en the nearly Off Broadway-like atmosphere turn De Regentes into an atmospheric and unique theatre.
